Welcome to a movie night about Cindy Sherman's artistic work, in collaboration with TjejLand.

We are happy to present the first of several exciting collaborations between Fotografiska and TjejLand, where we invite you to a series of fun and inspiring events.
Right now, Cindy Sherman, one of the most important photographers of our time, is showing the exhibition Tapestries at Fotografiska. On Sunday, March 17, we invite you to an evening where film scholar Annika Wik places Sherman's art in a cinematic context. We will show La Jetée - one of the films that inspired Sherman to create the Untitled Film Stills series that became her international breakthrough.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to explore one of the films that influenced one of the most important photographers of our time. Sherman made her international breakthrough with the Untitled Film Stills series, in which she cast herself in various stereotypical female roles inspired by 1950-60s films.
She tells Dazed Digital magazine about her initial inspiration for Untitled Film Stills:
- I happened upon a movie told entirely through still images, except for one brief moment of motion. I didn't remember the name of it, only the fact that I was entranced by the story told through these still images.
The film that Cindy describes was La Jetée by Chris Marker, which is a story made up almost entirely of still images; a short sequence of a woman opening her eyes is the only movement in the film. La Jetée was named one of the 50th greatest films of all time by the British Film Institute's Sight & Sound magazine.
In a 40-minute lecture, film scholar Annika Wik will place Cindy Sherman's art in a cinematic context, exploring the fantastic world of film, the spaces between images, the sharpness of the gaze and the transience of memory through photographs and film clips.
After the screening of La Jetée (28 min), the conversation continues in the bar. Tickets are available for an evening of art, film and engaging discussions. Don't miss this unique opportunity to experience artistic and cinematic excellence!
Thanks to NonStop Entertainment for providing us with the films.

About Tjejland:
Inspired by the phenomenon of sewing circles, where women gathered in the 20th century to socialize and create, the platform TjejLand similarly wants to be a place to gather and be inspired by the work of female photographers around the world. Since the project started in 2014, there have been three published issues of their magazine and an Instagram account that this month features female photographers from the US. Tjejland is run by Petra Stenvall-Thompson.
