Fotografiska is turning 15 and celebrating with its largest group exhibition yet
This is the start of a jubilee year for Fotografiska, as 2025 is the fifteenth anniversary of its opening.
Eighteen exhibitions will be held throughout the year, kicking off with a Swedish portrait master, the spectacular world of Toiletpaper, and a major exhibition of the internationally renowned photographer Anton Corbijn. The year ends with Fotografiska’slargest group exhibition yet with works stretching from the start to the present day. Another group exhibition will also be held with rising stars from the Swedish art and photography scene as part of the Emerging Artists initiative.
“We are thrilled to pay tribute to the power of photography and our first 15 years together with many of the world’s most established visual artists and rising stars,” says Pauline Benthede, Global Vice President of Exhibitions at Fotografiska.
The journey began on a May day in 2010, in the same place as today: the iconic and historic Royal Customs House (Stora Tullhuset) at Stadsgårdskajen in Stockholm. AsFotografiska turns 15, it has held 272 exhibitions, has had around six million visitors, has expanded internationally and has helped introduce many now-established artists in the exhibition halls.
the largest group exhibition ever
“After expanding Fotografiska around the world to Tallinn, New York, Berlin, Shanghai and the cities yet to open, it's great to come back to the mothership and celebrate our roots. We are so excited for the coming years and we have such a remarkable journey ahead as we grow our global community of art lovers,” says Yoram Roth, Executive Chairman of Fotografiska.
Fotografiska Stockholm is celebrating 2025 with 18 exhibitions, including Fotografiska’s first jubilee exhibition, which will also be the largest group exhibition yet in the Custom House. This exhibition will showcase audience favorites from 2010 to the present in parallel with a group exhibition of rising stars.
create a lively house party
“We are celebrating 15 years, not 150, so we will rather create a lively house party than a somber anniversary dinner. During the year, we will not only celebrate where we are today and our history, but above all the future of Fotografiska as one of Sweden’s most beloved cultural spaces and art institutions- a global leader in photography. We want to inspire our guests with new perspectives and continue to be a home for a myriad of different worlds and expressions. This year also offers a unique opportunity for all our visitors to relive their favorite moments with us,” says Elin Frendberg, Executive Director of Fotografiska Stockholm.
During this jubilee year, there will be exhibitions and visits by internationally recognized artists such as Anton Corbijn, Marco Brambilla, and Viviane Sassen. There is also focus on Swedish photographers, including portrait master Hans Hammarskiöld, who would have turned 100 this year, and an exhibition on being a family with Anna Clarén, Hannah Modigh, and Ewa Stackelberg. Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari’s creative studio Toiletpaper kicks off the year with a spectacular spring exhibition that includes a swimming pool filled with thousands of bananas as just one of its many experiences. Fotografiska’s Emerging Artists initiative will also run throughout the year with the latest rising stars from the art scene. First up is Vanni Jung Ståhle’s exhibition TheKings from Blomstermåla, an intimate portrayal of the young people and the hot-rodder culture of the small village in Småland where she grew up.
“The 2025 jubilee year encapsulates the span offered by Fotografiska since its inception and our love for all forms of photography. We are proud to have created a place entirely dedicated to a medium that ranges from documentary storytelling to art, fashion, and technology, unlike any other art form. We have an ambitious year ahead of us with Swedish greats, rising stars, and international names. It is particularly exciting that we will wrap up the year with our largest group exhibition yet, showcasing many returning artists from the last 15 years. As an extra present to our guests, we will be bringing these artists to Fotografiska throughout the year for interesting conversations and exciting experiences,” says Pauline Benthede, Global Vice President of Exhibitions at Fotografiska.
