Artist Talk: Anna Clarén

On how a camera can become an extension of the gaze — a way into what might otherwise pass us by. Moderated by Ulrika Hjalmarson Neideman from P3 Body & Soul.

A woman stands in a bright, tiled bathroom taking a mirror selfie with her phone. She is wearing under-eye patches and a nightgown. In the background, a man in underwear is vacuuming the floor next to the bathtub. The scene depicts an intimate, everyday domestic moment.

Welcome to an artist talk with photographer and artist Anna Clarén, one of three participating photographers in the group exhibition On Being Family. The conversation explores how to make the unremarkable striking – how a camera can become an extension of the gaze, a way into what might otherwise pass us by. How fragments of everyday life can turn into stories, and how the private suddenly touches on something universal.

The talk is moderated by Ulrika Hjalmarson Neideman, science journalist specializing in health and psychology, and longtime host of Kropp & Själ (Body & Soul) on Swedish Radio P1. Together, they delve into how art can help us process grief, crises, and challenges – and how creative expression can support us in moving forward through life.

An inspiring conversation for anyone curious about the role of art in our inner lives.

The talk will be held in Swedish.

About Anna Clarén

Anna Clarén, born in 1972, works within a subjective documentary tradition and is currently featured in the group exhibition On Being Family at Fotografiska. Clarén made her debut in 2006 with the exhibition and photobook Holding, which was awarded Sweden’s Best Photobook of the Year that same year. Since then, she has produced several major photographic series that have become both books and exhibitions. Human relationships – or the absence of them – are recurring themes in her work. Clarén’s photographs are represented in collections such as the Public Art Agency Sweden and Moderna Museet in Stockholm. She is also one of the lead instructors at Nordens Fotoskola, Biskops Arnö, where she has helped educate new generations of Swedish photographers.
