Artist Talk & Film Screening: I Am Martin Parr

I Am Martin Parr is the definitive portrait of an extraordinary photographer who revolutionized contemporary photography by inventing a political, humanistic, and accessible photographic language.

Film poster with a pink background and large green letters spelling out the title “I AM MARTIN PARR.” In front of the text, people are shown in everyday seaside scenes: two women sit on the ground with picnic items and bags, several people lean over a seawall looking toward the sea, and colorful balloons float on the right side. Small Union Jack flags hang like bunting across the top of the image. The poster has a playful, documentary-style aesthetic inspired by Martin Parr’s photography.

Join us for a unique encounter with Lee Shulman, the filmmaker behind the documentary I Am Martin Parr. As a close friend and collaborator of Parr, Lee Shulman offers a look behind the scenes in connection with the current exhibition Short & Sweet. During this afternoon session, he will share insights from the making of the film, his personal relationship with Parr, and the stories that exist beyond the frames. The talk will be followed by a full screening of the documentary.

About the documentary I Am Martin Parr

One of the most controversial photographers of his time, Martin Parr’s images often have the power to both amuse and leave us ever so slightly uncomfortable, caught between laughter and the uneasy recognition of ourselves in his uncompromising portrait of consumer society.

Though he’s now celebrated, collected and exhibited worldwide, Parr’s early work did not find an easy public and was highly criticized for trivializing the working class.
Yet,in retrospect, perhaps he was just observing what we often overlook - forcing it into the spotlight as an essential topic of discussion. I Am Martin Parr is the definitive portrait of an extraordinary photographer who revolutionized contemporary photography by inventing a political, humanist and accessible photographic language.
