A photograph can hold time still – and open a door into another person’s world. Join Donald Boström in a conversation with Marika Lagercrantz for an afternoon in which the stories within his photographs find a voice beyond the frame. An artist talk brings us closer to a life behind the camera: the encounters that linger, the people behind the pictures and the questions an image leaves with us. After the conversation, there is an opportunity to meet Boström as he signs copies of En stund på jorden.

The afternoon continues with a reception for Donald Boström’s exhibition with the same title. Guitar virtuoso Erik Söderlind performs among the photographs, bringing a musical voice to the gathering.

About Life Is But a Day (En stund på jorden)

Life Is But a Day (En stund på jorden) opens a window onto a life devoted to photojournalism. Across several decades and more than 80 countries, Donald Boström has followed people through war and conflict and drawn close to their everyday lives. Around twenty works bring together the photographs and the stories behind them: the people, the encounters and the sometimes life-changing decisions made behind the camera.

Here, there is space to linger over what a single image cannot always contain. The exhibition raises questions about closeness, responsibility and photography’s capacity to help us understand one another. What does the photographer choose to show, and what remains outside the frame? In an age of AI-generated images and disinformation, the exhibition highlights the importance of documentary photojournalism — and the people behind the pictures.

The exhibition is accompanied by the publication of the book with the same title as the exhibition. In conversation with Benke Carlsson, Donald Boström looks back on his life as a photojournalist, reflecting on the power of photography, journalism’s ethical dilemmas and the importance of being there in person.
