Cocktails & Conversations: Helene Schmitz

Roses, light and stamps - a conversation with Helene Schmitz

A collage with two images. On the left is a Swedish postage stamp from 2025 featuring a detailed illustration of a green plant with red thorns. The stamp reads "Sverige Brev", along with "Helene Schmitz/H." and "Postnord 2025". On the right is a black-and-white photograph of a woman in dark clothing sitting on a chair in a studio, with artworks leaning against the wall behind her. She is holding something in her hands and looking at the camera with a faint smile.

Welcome to an inspiring evening where photography meets poetry in mini format! Helene Schmitz, one of Sweden's most acclaimed photographers, will be visiting Fotografiska to talk about her latest assignment - to create Sweden's new stamps with roses in focus, commissioned by PostNord. The stamp will be launched the same evening.

With her characteristic eye and love for roses, Helene has taken on the challenge of capturing the beauty of the flower in a space to fit the right corner of a postcard - with only natural light and a subject that fades faster than it can be described.

During the evening, she will share the process behind the images, her thoughts on the small format and the art of making something as seemingly mundane as a postage stamp carry both artistic weight and global reach.

About Helene Schmitz

Helene Schmitz is one of Sweden's most acclaimed contemporary photographers, known for her poetic and thought-provoking images where nature is at the center. With a background in film and art history, she has for two decades explored the relationship between man and the wild, often through a scientific and historical filter.

Helene has exhibited both in Sweden and internationally and had an acclaimed exhibition entitled Transition at Fotografiska in 2016. She also participated in the group exhibition In Bloom 2023, where her work was in dialog with other artists who interpret the power and fragility of nature.
