A Swedish Cowboy: Popup-installation

Cultural heritage becomes art at Fotografiska

Horse racing as popular culture

Horse racing as popular culture During four days, 27-30 September, you can experience the pop-up installation ‘A Swedish Cowboy’. Here, horse racing is portrayed through a popular culture lens with a focus on emotions, memories and moments that have united Swedes for a century – a tribute to the 100th anniversary of Swedish horse racing.

About ‘A Swedish Cowboy’

From 27 to 30 September, visitors can follow the journey of trotting through a century, from the first competitions between farmers on frozen lakes to today's popular movement filled with drama, idols and unexpected stories. In a collaboration between Svensk Travsport, AB Trav & Galopp and Fotografiska Stockholm, the sport is portrayed through a popular culture lens, where historical moments and unique archive images are intertwined with contemporary interpretations. The result is a multifaceted installation, from then to now, where community, emotions and tradition are the focus in a story about Sweden.

"There has been a cowboy fever around the world in recent years. Country music has had a real upswing – not least thanks to Beyoncé's entry into the genre – and successful series such as Yellowstone have contributed to cowboy hats, horse motifs and boots now adorning every other fashion icon. By highlighting our own Swedish equivalent, trotting, we turn our gaze to the present and explore it through the unique culture and expression of the sport," says Katinka Hollenberg, Director of Partnerships at Fotografiska.

The installation is available for Fotografiska guests to experience in the extra venue Annie and is included in the regular admission ticket.
