Atoosa Farahmand & Oscar Hagberg
Not a Typical Persian Girl

February 20 is the opening of Not a Typical Persian Girl by Atoosa Farahmand and Oscar Hagberg, which is the latest exhibition in Fotografiska’s Emerging Artists series. Using photography, video, and staged images, this artist duo examines the plight of women in Iran, with a particular focus on how women’s rights have been brutally curtailed after the 1979 revolution. What had previously been a gradual path towards increased freedom–from the right to ride a bike and sing to the opportunity to participate fully in public spaces–was replaced by prohibition, control, and systematic oppression.
Not A Typical Persian Girl shows women and girls who refuse to be silenced. It depicts everyday life with humor, resistance, and a strong sense of the here and now characterized by protest, community, and the fight for equality and democracy. The exhibition is a powerful testimony to the creativity of the resistance.
