Martin Sköld & Joakim Berg

Ljus genom fingrarna

On June 27, Ljus genom fingrarna opens at Fotografiska Stockholm – a new spatial installation centering on the photography of former Kent member Martin Sköld, set to the music of Joakim Berg. For the first time, around 50 of Sköld's black-and-white photographs will be showcased in a major installation at Fotografiska, exploring themes of the city, memory, loneliness, and presence. The images are accompanied by Berg’s latest solo album.

"Jocke and I are rarely far apart in our artistic expression. In a way, we share the same fundamental tone within us," says Martin Sköld.

Martin Sköld is known to many as a member of the band Kent, but since wrapping up his music career, he has immersed himself even deeper in another artistic medium: photography. Over the past five years, Sköld has dedicated his time to photography, developing a visual language that often balances on the border between the city, movement, and stillness.

From June 27 to August 9, his new photographic installation Ljus genom fingrarna will be on display at Fotografiska. Here, Martin Sköld’s images and Joakim Berg’s music converge in a spatial installation exploring the city and memory. Sköld’s black-and-white photographs stay close to the urban and the everyday: light stretching across facades, bodies in motion, reflections, shadows, and fleeting moments that might otherwise easily pass unnoticed.

Early Mornings in Tokyo, Paris, and Mariefred

"The photos were taken everywhere from Mariefred to Tokyo, with a few stopovers in Paris, London, and Nice. I usually travel alone to different cities and head out early in the morning with my camera. It’s exactly the same process as making music, trying to convey a feeling within your body. Often, it's about loneliness. I operate almost entirely on gut feeling," says Martin Sköld.

Martin Sköld also photographed the cover for Joakim Berg’s latest album, images that were showcased at Fotografiska during a weekend in late May to mark the album release. Ljus genom fingrarna will be an entirely new experience, focusing on a large volume of Sköld's photographs, allowing them to interact with the music on different terms.

This summer, Fotografiska will be a place where contemporary photography meets pop-cultural expression in an incredibly beautiful way. Martin Sköld’s installation will be the perfect complement to our other summer exhibitions featuring icons like Martin Parr and Lotta Antonsson. It helps cement Fotografiska as the ultimate destination to hang out at this summer, especially for all Joakim Berg and Kent fans," says Jenny Kaiser, CEO of Fotografiska Stockholm.

Joakim Berg and Martin Sköld: Image and Music Side by Side

Joakim Berg’s music moves between light and darkness, between hopeful melodies and lyrics where optimism chafes. Here, the images do not serve as illustrations for the music, nor does the music act as a mere backdrop for the photos. Instead, they exist side by side as two distinct ways of approaching time, place, and memory, creating a space where urban fragments, memories, and movements are allowed to linger just a little longer.

"I hope that those who come here to experience the installation enjoy a beautiful moment in the room, and get the sensation that the walls are somehow dissolving," says Martin Sköld.
