One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

Behind this statistic are real lives and deeply personal experiences of uncertainty and fear, but also of strength, recovery, community and hope.

The ten photographs presented in One in Eight bring some of these experiences into view. They reflect the different realities of living with the disease, supporting someone through it, and navigating its impact on families and relationships.

Three pairs of legs in school uniforms, stretched out on sunlit grass. All wear pink socks and black lace-up shoes, the legs in different skin tones lined up side by side.

Through documentary photography, portraiture, and conceptual imagery, the artists explore moments of diagnosis, treatment, and physical change, as well as experiences of care, intimacy, grief, resilience, and everyday life. Together, the works reveal experiences that are individual yet connected and make space for stories that too often remain unseen.

Selected from more than 1,000 submissions to a global open call initiated by Fotografiska and The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign, the works were created by photographers and artists from around the world. The open call invited perspectives from people affected by breast cancer both directly and indirectly.

One in Eight is curated by Fotografiska and presented in collaboration with The Estée Lauder Companies and the Swedish Breast Cancer Association. The project was developed in connection with The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign, which for more than three decades has supported breast cancer research, education, early detection, care and community initiatives worldwide. To date, they have funded more than $156 million globally, including over $123 million for research through the Breast Cancer Research Foundation
