November 29 is the opening of Du såg mig med orädda ögon at Fotografiska Stockholm, a major retrospective of Tobias Regell’s career, one of Sweden’s most important portrait photographers. With his timeless black and white imagery, Regell portrays his subjects with a unique presence and intimacy. “This exhibition is a tribute to the trust that comes with being truly seen and the moment when individuals reveal their inner most person,” says Tobias Regell.

Du såg mig med orädda ögon at Fotografiska Stockholm is a major retrospective bringing together several decades of Tobias Regell’s photography. Portraits of artists, actors, ballet dancers, and other creative icons are shown side-by-side with fashion shoots and photographs of various settings. Tobias Regell is one of Sweden’s best-known portrait photographers with his timeless black and white imagery and striking portraits. His photographs are often characterized by a strong sense of being present and an intensity, where he meets the viewer with an open and honest gaze.

A tribute to the trust in being seen

“For over thirty years, I’ve followed people using the camera as a mirror and I’ve sought out the meetings that occur in these photographs, the moment when the subject dares to be themself. Musicians, dancers, actors, people on the go, and people in rest. Du såg mig med orädda ögon is a tribute to presence, to the trust that comes with being truly seen and the moment when individuals reveal their inner most person,” says Tobias Regell.

The exhibition has been created together with Marina Kereklidou as curator and Fotografiska Stockholm’s Mohamed Mire as the exhibition producer. With over 100 works, both well-known and previously unpublished photographs, it provides an exploration of Regell’s artistry. Viewers also gain unique insight into Regell’s creative process with a setting inspired by his own studio that has been created in the exhibition hall.

A dialogue between faces, across decades

Tobias Regell’s black and white expression runs like a thread throughout the exhibition, where he uses simple but powerful imagery to create photographs that are unbound by time and space. A portrait taken 30 years ago is able to communicate with newer forms of photography. A dialog emerges that transcends time and space.

“Tobias’s photographs have a calm that feels deeply human. His portraits are not about the superficial, they are about meetings, about daring to stop a moment and allow someone to truly see you. In Du såg mig med orädda ögon, we want to show an artistry that reminds us of the original power of photography: imparting presence,” says Marina Kereklidou, exhibition curator.

Du såg mig med orädda ögon runs from November 29, 2025 to April 19, 2026 at Fotografiska Stockholm.
