Martin Parr
Short & Sweet

Short & Sweet – just like the Swedish summer. The long-awaited major exhibition of works by Martin Parr finally opens at Fotografiska Stockholm, featuring nearly 400 works from his more than 50-year-long career. Visitors are invited to step into the legendary photographer’s distinctive visual world, filled with humorous glimpses of everyday life and sharp social satire. Short & Sweet opens at Fotografiska on May 23.

"With photography, I like to create fiction out of reality. I try and do this by taking society's natural prejudice and giving this a twist."
Soon, Fotografiska Stockholm opens the doors to its major exhibition of works by legendary British photographer Martin Parr, who passed away in December 2025. Created in collaboration with Magnum Photos, Short & Sweet is both a tribute to Parr’s life’s work and a celebration of one of the most unique voices in photographic history.

Over 50 years of sharp portrayals of everyday life
Featuring nearly 400 works spanning over 50 years of Parr’s career, the exhibition brings together a wide selection of his most significant series, offering a comprehensive retrospective of his sharp, satirical, and perceptive approach to portraying everyday life and human behavior. More than a visual journey, Short & Sweet invites us to reflect on human habits, societal shifts, and cultural phenomena.
— We are very proud to present such an extensive exhibition of Martin Parr’s work. Here, visitors truly get to step into his completely unique universe and see how he captured the humor, contradictions, and absurdities of everyday life like no one else, says Lisa Giomar Hydén, Exhibition Director at Fotografiska Stockholm.

From British industry to the aesthetics of the seaside resort
The exhibition features several of Parr’s most renowned series, including The Non-Conformists, Bad Weather, and The Last Resort. TheNon-Conformists portrays traditional communities in Northern England in transition, offering a poetic reflection on the impact of industrialization. Bad Weather documents the British people’s humor and resilience in extreme weather conditions. The Last Resort presents vivid scenes from seaside holiday destinations, revealing the absurdities of leisure culture.
Together, these series exemplify Parr’s distinctive visual language, where humor and irony transform everyday situations into sharp social commentary.

Globalization, consumption, and power
The exhibition also highlights Parr’s critical perspective on globalization and consumer culture through series such as Small World, which examines the effects of tourism, and Common Sense, where extreme close-ups of consumer goods create a satirical portrait of excess. In Establishment, he turns his lens toward structures of power and their visual symbolism, while Life’s a Beach humorously dissects the phenomenon of beach culture around the world. A dedicated section of the exhibition focuses on Parr’s photographs from China, where he documented the country’s rapid societal transformation since the 1980s.
Short & Sweet is on view at Fotografiska Stockholm from May 23 to September 27, 2026.

About Martin Parr
Martin Parr (1952–2025) was born in Epsom, Surrey, England, and became one of the most influential photographers of his time. Encouraged by his grandfather, he developed an early interest in photography and later studied at Manchester Polytechnic. Alongside teaching, he built his own artistic practice and established himself within the photographic field.
Inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Parr developed a highly distinctive visual language, which led to his membership in Magnum Photos in 1994. He is known for his saturated colors and unconventional compositions, and for documenting cultural peculiarities around the world—from Japan, China, and the United States to Europe and the United Kingdom. Themes of leisure, consumption, and communication recur throughout his work, often explored with sharp irony.
Parr published over 150 books and edited more than 50. His work has been exhibited internationally, and he has curated several acclaimed exhibitions, including Strange and Familiar at the Barbican in London (2016). He received numerous prestigious awards, including the Sony World Photography Award for Outstanding Contribution to Photography (2017), the Erich Salomon Prize (2006), and the Baume & Mercier Award (2008). In 2017, the Martin Parr Foundation opened in Bristol.
